Learn From and Observe Others
Use effective parenting techniques that your own parents utilized effectively on you and abstain from the ineffective or negative ones. If you have friends with children, spend some time with them and their kids and observe the interaction and rapport. Is the rearing effective and the relationship positive? - take notes on effective techniques. Is the rearing ineffective or the relationship negative? -take notes on things to avoid doing. This is your chance to be critical and use that criticism when dealing with your own child.
Don't be Afraid and get Involved
A great dad has both reflected and soul searched about what fatherhood means to him and isn't afraid to become involved or make a few mistakes. Great dads establish their presence and importance in every nook and cranny of their children's lives- they are engaged, active, and involved. You cannot parent from the sidelines, you have to get in there and get messy. If you don't yet have kids, try babysitting a friend's child to help prepare yourself for the unpredictable situations that children present.
Communicate
A "know-it-all" attitude won't get you far when it comes to fatherhood- you need to listen to be a successful dad. Parenting requires constant learning and growth, so you need to be willing to listen to your children and take that feedback into account. Constant communication with your child, partner and other trusted sources should be enough to give you feedback on your parenting style. Often times we hope to be one way and, without realizing, end up acting another. This feedback may let you know if you need to change your fathering style for the best.
Continually Grow Your Resources and Support
The Internet is a great way to find a directory of local resources and support agencies. You shouldn't be afraid to seek out help when you need it and you should be aware of local resources should you need them. Growing a list of email and phone contacts of people whose advice can be trusted will also be useful. Your children become who they are because of what you teach them, how you treat them and by watching the example you set. Be prepared and willing to learn in order to be the best parent you can be.
