Being a great parent isn’t an inherent ability amongst all women or a foreign territory to all men. Raising a child is hard work and long hours but many people agree that the rewards are greater than any six-figure salary could ever buy.  But still, parenthood does entail a permanent life-altering commitment, so before you pursue it you need to ask yourself - what are my priorities and am I open to change? Once you become a parent it is natural to be concerned about whether you will be a good father. In reality, good parenting is a set of learned skills rather than innate ability. Having a PhD in family therapy still won’t necessarily make you a super dad; there is no definitive guide and no guaranteed results when it comes to parenting. Nothing will prepare you like experience; however, there are a few things you can do that will aid you to becoming the best parent you can be.

Be Self Aware

Being self aware will help you set realistic goals and help you accomplish the most. Self aware people know their areas of strength and can capitalize on them and know what areas require improvement. Self awareness, self control, communication, and coping skills are vital to parenting. Dads need to do some soul searching about how they will keep their anger in check, how they will manage frustration and stress, and how they can manage when their patience is tested.

Prioritize Your Relationship

Successful parenting is often a shared result between partners which stems from communication and boundaries. The better the relationship you have with your partner, the stronger the family unity - so keep the romance alive. A common conflict that couples with children have is that one partner feels neglected. Make time for just the two of you. Date nights are helpful both for having fun, perpetuating romance and intimacy, and working on communication issues. Communication takes work, but can prevent or minimize issues such as power struggles, resentments, insecurity, jealousy, or feeling unappreciated getting blown out of proportion. Consistently establishing and reaffirming family as top priority means having adequate time together and opportunity for clear communication, building trust and intimacy, establishing routine, reliability, and unity.
