A few other skills you will need in prospecting and sales are: sales approach, ability to close the sale, time management, and overcoming objections. This business model is solely about sales and distribution; the ability to sell is the most important business skill you need. A consultative sales approach, focusing on your customer’s needs, is usually the strongest and most successful approach.
What to Consider
Like any opportunity, there are many things that should be considered. First, consider who introduced you to the opportunity? Is this someone you trust and know reasonably well? Also, take a look at the people at the very top of the organization? You need to investigate your entire "upline" just like you would a business partner you’d never met before. Are they reputable? What do others have to say about them? Have they been successful and reputable in their previous businesses? Do your research and find out if the person recruiting you is willing to share exactly what their income stream looks like. Reputable multi-level marketing companies will have a minimum of five years of solid growth. After you have chosen a quality network marketing company, but before getting involved, consider if there is a need for the product in the marketplace. If there isn’t, then you should reconsider your endeavor. If your network marketing company’s product focuses on a secret formula or has claims that cannot be backed up—beware.
What to Watch out for
When you get started, you may be asked to pay for necessary training, marketing materials, and inventory. This is where you need to be careful. Beware of inventory loading and remember pyramid schemes are notorious for requiring the distributor to purchase more product than he is likely to ever sell. Also, watch out for schemes where you are paid primarily from money received from new recruits. These are almost always less than savory endeavors.
Starting
As with any small business, once you have your own product, develop a plan. One of the first things to do whether you are opening your own small business or partaking in a network marketing company is to develop a strategy. The two most important strategies to devise, in this case, are how you will recruit your downline and what will be your sales strategy for selling the product to others. Starting with a handful of quality agents in your downline who can be successful is essential. You, just as much as they, will want to see success and the only way this can happen is if they too possess the right skill set and drive.
