Interview With Bif Naked

S: Fame or Fortune? Why?
B: I haven't made a fortune and I don't think I'm really that famous but the good thing about fame is that you can use notoriety to bring attention to issues that need attention on a sociopolitical level. Its like a friend of mine, Nazanin Afshin-Jam, she was a runner-up for Miss World Canada, and even though she had a political science degree from UBC, her crown spring-boarded her to be heard as a human rights activist. She's an advocate for a lot of people in her country, Iran, and for a lot of the women on death row over there. Regardless of the path she needed to take to be heard, come hell or high water, she was going to be heard. I think she's a prime example of someone who uses fame to springboard her own political active agenda and I think that's very inspirational, so I would definitely say fame over fortune.
S: What's the hardest thing about performing and what's the best thing about performing?
B: The hardest thing is having to sing 'Sick' every night and then waking up every morning with just a whisper voice. The best thing is seeing the faces of the fans and seeing them smile.
S: You're a firm believer that you never know what will happen in life, for instance you say your music career started by accident, how does this effect the music you write?
B: You don't know where a song is going to go. You start and see where the music takes you. Sometimes a song can be born out of a sentence that's written on a paper. I don't like writing around. I don't like writing in the studio. I usually come up with all my songs in my kitchen. I'm always in my kitchen. I cook everyday; it's one of my creative passions. So I spend most of my time cooking and I basically end up getting a disk from Jason with a song he has been working on or a song idea (which is like elaborate and finished from verse to end note - he uses instruments and stuff, I don't play an instrument) and for me it's a humming of melodies and stuff. I rely on him and basically hit repeat, repeat, repeat. The next day I go down to the studio and hammer it out.
S: What's next for Bif Naked?
B: We're touring the rest of the summer. It's hard to say. The disk is just coming out in Europe now so we're hoping to go over there and start touring over there.
S: Since we're a men's interest magazine, we gotta ask, is there something you want men around the world to know? Any advice for them to live by?
B: You can't fix it. When a women is upset or talking about her day, or being wronged by her parents or being wronged by her something. Basically, she is telling the man just to be heard. Simple. Often it is a man's nature to be very demonstrative and tell her that you should do this B: and you should do that, or I'm gonna go down and tell this guy. You know - fixing. Then, the women gets defensive or angry and she back peddles or gets angry with the man. Now it's not even about the thing that made her mad, and this happens time and time again in every relationship.
