Cholesterol Issues

According to Grewal, when blockage occurs in the legs, pain can accumulate quickly when walking. To make matters worse, the pain could result in gangrene (decaying of body tissue) in said area to the point of amputation. "When this blockage happens in the arteries supplying blood to the intestines. Intestines can become gangrenous and cause ischemic colitis (inflammation/injury as a result of inadequate blood supply), which can be surgical emergency." Grewal adds that the three S' - namely Smoking, Sugar (Diabetes) and Stress - accelerates the action of cholesterol in these arteries and causes early blockages.
Cholesterol Issues between men and women: Who's worse?
Grewal feels that women take better care of their health than men. He insists that they visit doctors more regularly; they take their medicine and follow up. Men on the other hand are almost always sent in by their wives to get their annual physical done. They skip appointments, miss medications and don't show up for follow-ups. Therefore we see more complications from high cholesterol in men than in women.
Grewal's Tip to avoid those problems:
• Consume Fish Oil: This provides Omega 3 fatty acids - for mildly high cholesterol
• Maintain a High Fiber diet: This prevents absorption of cholesterol or at least slows it down- for mild to moderately high cholesterol
• Exercise Regularly: This will burn fat and reduce cholesterol (for mild to moderately high cholesterol).
• Statins: a powerful class of prescription medicine, which decreases bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol. - For moderate to very high cholesterol
• Zetia TM: is another medicine that prevents absorption of cholesterol.
• Niacin: a vitamin which helps reduce cholesterol.
• Losing weight will almost definitely reduce cholesterol.
One of Grewal's patients lost 70 lbs in his weight loss program and he came off all his diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure medicine. "I am proud of him and he is proud of himself too."
