Avoiding Unhealthy Holidays

Every year around the holidays, it seems, far too many people give into excess and throw their diet and exercise routines out the proverbial window. Regrettably, these actions often have strong negative impacts on all the hard work they have done throughout the year. This doesn't have to happen. This shouldn't happen. Keeping fit over the holiday season isn't exactly rocket science and the holidays never really change. We know each and every year when they are coming and there is never any surprise when they finally do arrive. This means that the season should be calculated into diet and exercise routine well in advance. You can enjoy the holiday season and keep healthy while doing it. Here are 10 easy tips to help you stay trim and healthy over the holidays.
Make a Plan
If you don't already have one, make one. This plan should go all the way into the New Year. Weigh yourself and take your measurements now, if you can. Check your measurements weekly to ensure you are keeping yourself on track.
Have a Cheat Day
There is nothing wrong with a cheat day and it is important to put one in so you can enjoy the holidays with your family and friends. This does not mean you can take two or three cheat days a week. Just one!
Cut Your Weight Goal
If your goal is to lose weight, then over the holidays cut that weight goal in half. If you still manage to reach the original goal then that's a bonus. This does not mean you get to put on any weight!
Prepare for Gatherings
If you know you have to attend holiday gatherings where the food may not suit you, then eat before you leave the house. This can work quite well.
Try Something New
If you haven't tried anything new and out of your comfort zone in your workout, then this is the time. Whether it's indoor rock climbing or roller skating with the family, it's physical activity and it breaks up the monotony over the holidays.
Watch Your Portions
Enjoy the meals you like over the holidays but watch the portions. If you know you are going to eat cheese cake, remind yourself that you don't have to eat the whole cake. One slice will do. Track your portions throughout the day as well so you don't overload the calories. This will also let you know when you have passed your daily limit.
